YouTube thumbnail size: dimensions, file size and safe areas

A custom thumbnail is the single biggest thing you control about whether someone clicks your video. YouTube’s requirements are simple, but the thumbnail is mostly seen tiny on a phone — so size the text and pick the layout for that, not for your monitor.

The requirements

Safe areas and layout

Step by step

  1. Open the Glowtrack Studio thumbnail maker — it starts at 1280 × 720 with the video-length area marked in pink.
  2. Pick a template, then add a background photo and, if you like, a cut-out PNG of yourself or your subject.
  3. Type a short headline. Put *asterisks* around the word to highlight and press Enter for a second line.
  4. Check the phone-size preview and the checks under it; move anything out of the pink area.
  5. Download the JPG — it’s automatically kept under YouTube’s 2 MB limit — and upload it in YouTube Studio.

Questions

Can I use a 1920 × 1080 thumbnail?

Yes, it’s the same 16:9 shape and YouTube scales it down — as long as the file stays under 2 MB. 1280 × 720 is plenty and keeps the file small.

What about YouTube Shorts?

Shorts use a frame from the video or a cover chosen in the app, shown in a vertical 9:16 crop. For a Shorts cover, use the Story / Reel / Shorts size (1080 × 1920).

Why is my thumbnail blurry?

Usually the source photo is too small or the JPG was compressed hard to fit 2 MB. Start from a large image and export at 1280 × 720.
