Instagram post sizes, and how the profile grid crops them

Instagram shows posts in the feed at their own shape, but your profile grid now previews every post as a 3:4 rectangle. That means the size you pick decides both how much of the feed a post fills and how much of it survives on your profile.

Questions

What is the best Instagram post size?

For most feed posts, 1080 × 1350 (4:5): it takes up the most space in the feed and loses only a sliver on the profile grid. Use 1080 × 1440 (3:4) if the grid look matters most.

Will Instagram compress my image?

Yes, a little. Uploading at exactly 1080 pixels wide avoids an extra resize and keeps it sharpest.

Can I change the grid crop?

Yes — when posting or editing, you can adjust the profile grid preview. Keeping important content central saves you the trouble.
